What drives the cost of a retaining wall in Auckland?
We do not publish a metre rate, because a metre rate is the thing that makes retaining wall quotes impossible to compare. What we can do is explain exactly what moves the number, so you can read a quote properly.

01 / The short answer
A metre rate hides everything that actually decides the price.
Two walls of identical length and height on neighbouring Auckland properties can differ substantially in cost, because what is above the wall, what is below it and how you get plant to it are different. A quote expressed as a rate per metre is a quote that has not looked at those things.
This matters commercially. The cheapest quote on a retaining wall is very often the one that has assumed the least: no drainage detail, minimum embedment, no allowance for the surcharge above, no consent.
The comparison that is worth making is not price against price. It is scope against scope.

02 / The main drivers
What actually drives retaining wall cost.
Retained height, surcharge, ground conditions, access, the wall system, drainage and disposal, and whether consent and engineering are required. Those seven account for most of the variation between projects.
- Retained height
- Cost does not rise in a straight line with height. As height increases, embedment, member sizes and reinforcement all increase, so cost rises faster than length does.
- Surcharge
- A driveway, pool or building above the wall increases the design load, which increases the structure. It can also move the project from an exempt wall to a consented, engineered one.
- Ground conditions
- Bearing capacity, fill depth, rock, and groundwater all affect what has to be built and how hard it is to build. Unknown ground is the biggest source of variation between an estimate and a final cost.
- Access
- Whether plant can reach the wall line, what size machine fits, and how material gets in and spoil gets out. On tight Auckland sites this can matter as much as the wall itself.
- Wall system
- Timber pole, H-beam and infill, reinforced block, poured concrete or reinforced soil. Each has different material, labour and plant profiles.
- Drainage and disposal
- The drainage zone, geotextile, subsoil drain and connecting to an approved outlet. Spoil removal is a real cost on sites with poor access.
- Consent and engineering
- Where required: structural design, geotechnical investigation, consent fees, inspections and documentation. These are real project costs, not optional extras.
03 / Hidden variables
The things that change a retaining wall cost after work starts.
The common ones are ground that differs from what was assumed, existing services in the wall line, an existing structure that has to come out, water that has to be managed during construction, and neighbouring property access that has to be negotiated.
- Ground conditions differing from assumption, particularly undocumented fill
- Services in or near the wall line: stormwater, wastewater, water, power, telecommunications
- Demolition and disposal of an existing failing wall
- Groundwater or seepage requiring management during construction
- Temporary works needed to support ground or an existing structure during construction
- Access agreements with a neighbouring property, where the wall is on or near a boundary
- Consent conditions requiring inspections or documentation not allowed for at the start

How to compare retaining wall quotes properly.
Compare scope, not headline price. Check whether each quote includes drainage in full, states the embedment or references a design, allows for the surcharge above the wall, includes consent and engineering where required, and allows for spoil removal and reinstatement.
- Does it specify the drainage system: aggregate zone, geotextile, subsoil drain and a named outlet?
- Does it state embedment depth, or reference an engineer's design?
- Does it acknowledge what sits above the wall, and allow for it?
- Does it include consent preparation, lodgement and fees where consent is required?
- Does it include engineering design and producer statements where required?
- Does it allow for demolition and disposal of an existing wall?
- Does it include spoil removal, backfill, compaction and reinstatement?
- Is the wall system stated specifically, including treatment level for timber?
05 / How SRW prices
How SRW arrives at a price for a retaining wall.
We assess the site first and establish what the wall actually has to do. Where a project can be scoped without engineering, we price it from there. Where engineering is involved, there are two honest routes and we tell you which one you are on.
The first route is to price after the design is settled. The design determines the structure, so this is the number that holds, and on a wall whose form is genuinely open it is the right way round.
The second is to price ahead of the final design so a contract can be locked in and the project can start moving. That is a real thing we do and it has a real trade-off: the price is built on assumptions about the design, and the assumptions are set out so you can see them. Where the design lands outside them, the price moves.
What we do not do either way is quote a metre rate down the phone. Whichever route a project takes, drainage, embedment, access and disposal are established before a number is given.

Common questions about cost drivers in Auckland.
Why won't you publish a price per metre?
Because it would be misleading. The same metre of wall costs very different amounts depending on retained height, surcharge, ground, access and whether consent is required. A published rate would tell you nothing useful about your project.
Can you give me a ballpark over the phone?
We would rather see the site. What we can do on the phone is tell you which of the cost drivers on this page are likely to apply to your project, which is usually more useful than a number that later moves.
Why is one quote so much cheaper than the others?
Usually because it includes less. The most common omissions are the full drainage system, adequate embedment, allowance for surcharge, and consent and engineering. Compare the scope line by line before comparing the totals.
Does consent add much to the cost?
It adds design, documentation, Council fees and inspections. It is a real cost. It is also not optional where it applies, and building a wall that needed consent without one creates a problem that surfaces when the property is sold.
Is a taller wall proportionally more expensive?
No, it is more than proportional. Doubling retained height more than doubles the load, so embedment, member sizes and reinforcement all increase. Terracing into two lower walls is sometimes cheaper than one tall one, and sometimes it is not.
When do I get a firm price?
After the site is assessed and, where engineering is required, after the design is settled. That is the point at which a number can be relied on.
